Car companies come out with new models almost every year. While most companies will simply redesign previous models with a few added improvements, it seems that Hyundai is going down a different path. The new 2012 Hyundai Veloster is certainly a unique departure from the cars currently on the market. Aimed at being a distinctive and sporty option for new car buyers, the 2012 Veloster is also being sold as an affordable and fuel efficient vehicle as well. One of the most unique, and easily recognizable, features of this new hatchback is the fact that it has one driver’s side door and two passenger side doors.
The exterior design of the 2012 Veloster is the first thing that anyone will notice about this sporty new hatchback. The front end has an almost alien like appearance with the intakes for the grill being somewhat camouflaged within the overall design of the body. The design of the front end gives the impression of a car that is hungry and eager to be driven. The front end slopes back over the roof and culminates in a smooth and fluid rear end. Hyundai has said that this new design improves the aerodynamics of the 2012 Hyundai Veloster which helps add to its fuel efficiency.
As we said before, the most distinctive difference between the Veloster 2012 models and other cars on the market is its three door configuration. From the driver’s side the 2012 Veloster appears to be a two door coupe. It’s the passenger side that really makes it unique. There is one obvious door, opposite to the driver’s door, but hidden behind that passenger door is another door. The difference is that this door is front hinged, hidden in the design and can be opened independently of the door in front of it. While it isn’t rare to find a coupe with a hidden door, it’s rare to find one that opens fully and independently of the door in front of it. The trunk access is a typical hatchback opening that swings up for ease of use.

The interior of the 2012 Hyundai Velsoter is surprising in that it is so comfortable and roomy for a car of its size. Most hatchbacks and coups are rather small when you get in them and the rear row of seats is usually a good deal smaller than what you would find in a sedan. The Veloster 2012 model offers plenty of leg room with beautifully upholstered seats. The dashboard has been described as slightly busy but it offers easy readability and plenty of information. Hyundai has said that the design for the 2012 Veloster was inspired by a sport bike and the interior goes a long way in conveying this idea. To top it all off, the Hyundai Veloster 2012 models come with a multifunction touch screen that should deliver an array of different information and displays.
The over all look and feel of both the exterior and interior is one of the major selling points for the 2012 Veloster but Hyundai knows that it isn’t all about looks alone. Hyundai is trying to create an accessible and affordable car that takes high gas prices into consideration. Most of the engineering of the 2012 Veloster has been designed to reduce drag and improve engine fuel efficiency to help owners get the most out of every drop of fuel. Under the hood we find that the Veloster 2012 models boast a respectable 1.6 liter engine that is capable of producing 138 horsepower. While this may not blow the socks off of a real speed freak, it means that the 2012 Hyundai Veloster has enough power to keep most people happy. The 2012 Veloster comes with a standard six speed automatic transmission which can be upgraded to a manual/automatic transmission with an automatic clutch that Hyundai calls the DCT.
The standard options package for the 2012 Hyundai Veloster is respectable but Hyundai has cut down on features a bit to keep the car within its estimated budget range. Power doors, locks and mirrors are all standard. The Hyundai Velsoter 2012 also comes with keyless entry, air conditioning and its seven inch, multi-function, touch screen display. The optional packages will upgrade the vehicle to include a push button start, a 450 watt sound system, navigation system and a panoramic sun roof.
Auto makers come out with new models every year but it’s rare that a company comes out with a vehicle that is such an impressive departure from other cars on the road. The 2012 Hyundai Veloster is certainly meant to stand out with its door configuration and unique front end design. Intended to appeal to a younger generation of car buyers, the sport bike inspired design is carried through the exterior and interior quite well. While the engine doesn’t pack quite as much power as sportier cars, it certainly offers a respectable set of specs. The Hyundai Veloster 2012 is sure to turn a few heads when it is finally released and on the road.
